Jargon Buster – Which type of dishwasher is right for me?
With so different types of dishwashers to choose from, it can be difficult knowing which one is right for you. Our simple guide below should help you find the best type to suit your needs.
What is an integrated dishwasher?
Integrated dishwashers are designed to blend into built-in kitchens. They have a sleeker design as they are hidden behind a door of the same model as the surrounding kitchen units. They are generally more expensive and less portable than freestanding dishwashers.
There are two styles on integrated dishwasher, fully integrated and semi-integrated. Fully integrated models are completely hidden behind a cabinet door and are the most discrete option. Semi-integrated models are predominantly covered by a cabinet door but the control panel is left visible at the top for easy access of the controls and display. This could be considered the middle ground between a freestanding dishwasher and fully integrated.
What is a freestanding dishwasher?
A freestanding dishwasher is the most common type. The entire front of the machine is visible and they slot into any kitchen that will accommodate them.
The great variety in freestanding dishwashers makes it more likely that you will find one at the right price for you. They are more portable than integrated models so, while they don't blend as well, you have more freedom to move them if you change kitchen or house.
There are also 3 different sizes of dishwasher to choose from.
Full - sized dishwashers
There is a range of full-sized dishwashers that are roughly 60 cm wide and can fit between 120 and 150 items in one load. As they can wash more at once, they are more water and energy efficient. They are ideal for larger households however a smaller kitchen may struggle to occupy the size of the appliance.
Slimline dishwashers are perfect for slotting into smaller spaces. They are roughly 45cm wide but can still hold between 90 and 100 items.
Compact dishwashers are designed to be either integrated into the space of a drawer in a built-in kitchen or to sit on top of the counter as a table top design. They are roughly 55cm wide and have a capacity of 40 to 60 items. They are perfect for small kitchens, especially those who lack floor space to hold a full or slimline dishwasher. However, they are generally more expensive and not as energy or water efficient as other models.
